Basic Blueprint Reading Course

Registration for this course will close Wednesday, March 8, 2023!

Thursday evenings from 4pm-6pm beginning March 23, 2023. This class will be held in person at the Syracuse Builders Exchange as well as virtually via Zoom. Virtual attendees must attend separately - no screen sharing. All attendees must have the Zoom app downloaded and must sign in with an individual email address.

This course will give attendees basic skills necessary to understand construction documents, and familiarize them with what to expect when reviewing the drawings. This includes familiarization with not only the Architectural scope, but site / civil & all mechanical trades as well. The importance of Project specifications and other related items that are part of a complete set of Contract documents will also be focused on. Participation is encouraged, and having interactive discussion will be an important piece of the course.

James Paolini, AIA

Mr. Paolini has over three decades of experience with various types of site and building design, project management, facility condition assessments, peer reviews for both public and private projects, as well as construction administration. His responsibilities consist of all phases of Architectural design from project viability / pre-design through closeout and commissioning.

Market segments include Federal GSA and VA (both VISN & NCA), government contract work including ID / IQ contract fulfilment, along with complete design services for residential, offices, retail, vehicle maintenance and industrial & aviation facilities.

James has held various positions in the American Institute of Architects Central New York chapter including President, Secretary and Director of Advocacy. He taught Architectural Visual Communication at SUNY Morrisville and been an invited guest juror at Syracuse University for various undergraduate and graduate level Thesis critiques.

OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Course

Date: May 10 -11, 2023

Time: 8am to 1:30 pm both days

Free for SBE Member firms only.

Instructor: Lisa Brownson, CSP, Safety Source Consultants, Ltd.

This class will be held at the Syracuse Builders Exchange located at 6563 Ridings Rd, Syracuse, NY. We have several safety guidelines in place - please be sure to review them. Due to demand, only 4 people per company.

Please Be Advised – There is a Processing Fee for each Student’s Completion Card. This Non-Refundable Fee Must Be Received Or The Completion Card Will Not Be Released To The Student. Payment of $10.00 per student Must Be Received By The First Day Of Class. If Paying By Check – Please Make Payable To: Safety Source Consultants. Please Be Aware OSHA Regulations Prohibit The Instructor From Distributing Completion Cards To Anyone Other Than The Student Present At The Class. Cards Will Not Be Distributed To Employers. If A Copy Is Required, Please Have Your Employee Provide One.

Students must attend both days in order to receive their completion card

SBE Safety Guidelines:

Attendees of any class must be pre-registered. Anyone not on the pre-registration list will not be admitted. Do not send a replacement unless you notify SBE in advance.
Entrance to the building as well as exiting, will be through the rear doors ONLY. This entrance is located at the rear parking lot on the southern end of the building. Do not enter or exit through the main front entrance or through our plan room entrance.
Hand sanitizer will be available in the classroom.

Syracuse Builders Exchange has opted to offer member access to a multiple employer plan (MEP), sponsored by the Building Industry Employers of New York State, that allows members with existing retirement plans to offload fiduciary responsibility and in many cases significantly reduce plan costs.

New York State law will soon mandate that all employers with 10 or more employees offer a retirement plan or join the New York State Secure Choice Savings plan. SBE is providing access to a cost-effective alternative with more flexible plan design and higher contribution limits.

Instructors for this seminar will be Andrew K. Kay, AIF and Justin A. Sansone, CPA, AIF with Alesco Advisors. The objective of this course is to have a better understanding of why the AIA document is used and how to use it. This course will include topics on G702 and G703 payment forms. The instructor will cover Application for Payment, Continuation Sheet, line items, and change orders (as it pertains to billing).

James is an accomplished consultant with nearly 40 years of experience in the construction industry in a variety of disciplines including, but not limited to: construction management, construction administration, general construction, sitework, concrete, paving, masonry, structural steel, miscellaneous metals, roofing, soft flooring, hard flooring, drywall, and painting.
