OSHA #3015 Excavation, Trenching and Soil Mechanics

Course Description

This course covers the OSHA Excavation Standard and safety and health aspects of excavation and trenching. Course topics include practical soil mechanics and its relationship to the stability of shored and unshored slopes and walls of excavations, introduction of various types of shoring (wood timbers and hydraulic), soil classification, and use of protective systems. Testing methods are demonstrated, and students participate in workshops in the use of instruments such as penetrometers, torvane shears, and engineering rods. Upon course completion, students will have the ability to assess employers' compliance with the OSHA Excavation Standard, utilize soil testing methods to classify soil types, determine protective systems for excavation operations, and training requirements.

Minimum student contact hours: 20

All participants must bring a current copy of the OSHA regulations, 29 CFR 1926, to the course.

Be prepared to act when emergencies arise. When you understand first aid, you’ll gain the ability to help those in need. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can help save a life if a person’s breathing or heart stops. When a sudden cardiac arrest event happens, minutes matter. In this course you will learn how to treat and recognize heart attacks, strokes, diabetic emergencies and more.

This course will also speak about first aid for severe bleeding. Serious injury can lead to life-threatening blood loss within minutes, be prepared to provide lifesaving care when the unexpected happens.

This course will be an in-person only session, no virtual attendance. Completion cards are distributed at the close of class. The course will be held at Syracuse Builders Exchange, 6563 Ridings Road, Syracuse, NY 13206. Attendees must be pre-registered to attend.

Public Work Registration System for Contractors Webinar

In 2023, the New York State legislature passed a law that will soon mandate all contractors bidding on public work to be registered with the New York State Department of Labor (“NYS DOL”) prior to submitting a bid. Contractors will also be required to ensure that any subcontractor working on the project be registered before beginning work. There are similar requirements for certain publicly funded private projects. This law is scheduled to become effective late this year.

Although the NYSDOL issued proposed guidelines for how the contractor registration law will be administered (see attached), the Building Industry Employers of New York State (“BIE NYS”), in conjunction with the BIE NYS affiliated construction industry Associations, are pleased to present a free webinar that will review and discuss the impending required contractor registration system.
